UGC NET Certificate Validity 2026, Career Opportunities, Salary & JRF Details

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has assigned the National Testing Agency (NTA) the responsibility of conducting the UGC-NET examination. This test determines the eligibility of Indian candidates for the Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor, appointment as Assistant Professor along with admission to Ph.D., and admission to Ph.D. only in Indian universities and colleges. Since December 2018, the UGC-NET has been conducted by the NTA in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

The award of JRF and eligibility for Assistant Professorship and/or Ph.D. admission are decided based on a candidate’s combined performance in both Paper I and Paper II of the UGC-NET examination. Candidates qualifying under the “Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.” category are eligible for teaching positions as Assistant Professors as well as Ph.D. admission, but they are not entitled to receive the JRF award. Similarly, candidates qualifying under the “admission to Ph.D. only” category are eligible solely for Ph.D. admission and not for JRF or Assistant Professor appointments.
